Italy came to Melbourne. In the early 1900s many Italians settled in Carlton, and over the years have made Lygon Street their own. Lygon Street has the biggest selection of Italian restaurants and cafes of anywhere in Australia, and was the first suburb in Melbourne to promote eating outdoors and tables and chairs on footpaths.

Lygon Street is easily accessible by tram from the city and is only about a 25 minute walk from the Melbourne City Centre. what impact did the gang land war have on Lygon street?
Lygon Street was the main headquarters of an Italian Australian criminal organisation called The Carlton Crew. The Carlton Crew consisted of Alphonse Gangitano “Black Prince of Lygon Street”, Graham Kinniburgh, Mick Gatto and Jason Moran. These men often used Lygon Street as a hub to talk, drink and eat. The Carlton Crew was made up of a lot of Italian originated men, who naturally settled in the area of Melbourne known as “Little Italy”. Although none of the shootings of the Gangland war directly affected Lygon Street the Gangsters could often be seen on Lygon Street or in one of the top rooms of a couple of the restaurants and bars.

Melbourne Project

On Wednesday the 26th of October our group "Little Italy" went back into the city, for the second day of the Melbourne project. At 8:45am all group members arived at city square. From there we went to Flinders Street Station and caught a Hurstbrindge train to Parliament Station. From Parliament Station we walked up through Carlton Gardens past the Melbourne Museum and made our way along Grattan Street until we hit Lygon Street. As we were rapidly running out of time, we made our way to Argyle Square to work out what we should do in our remaining 30 minutes. After a brief conversation we decided that we would do a video log. Using a video camera brought by a team member we took some footage of the team walking down Lygon Street. Once we had reached the end of Lygon Street it had proved to be quite convenient because we were attending the Old Melbourne Gaol one block away. After getting a tour of Old Melbourne Gaol we then got lunch and made our way to China Town. Once in China Town we went to the China Town Musuem and got a tour of China Town and the history behind it. After the China Town tour our day had reached its end.
Next week we plan to to continue with our video log and to start surveying people in Lygon Street.
